SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT THEORY

 What is Scientific Management Theory?

Scientific management theory was developed by Frederick Taylor in 1911 during the industrial revolution to encourage the industrial organizations switch to mass production. Scientific Management Theory is scientific approached to find the most optimize way to perform work process in workplace. This is also known as Taylor's Scientific Management Theory (FourWeekMBA,2023).

There are four principles of Scientific Management Theory such as;

Figure 1-Principles of Scientific Management (Anjali,2019)

1. Science Not Rule of Thumb

The concept of the rule of thumb was based on the trial-and-error method and to perform any task efficiently; there should be an in-depth analysis of that job and standard way of carrying out that particular task each time, throughout the organization.

When science is applied instead of the rule of thumb, to any job, it standardizes that work. Moreover, the workers get a specialized way of performing the task and wastage of a lot of time, cost and resources can be avoided.

2. Harmony Not Discord

Taylor emphasized on maintaining peace and harmony in the workplace eliminate the conflict among the leadership and the workers. Conflicts only result in negative impact towards the organization

There can be a significant improvement and growth in productivity if there is a friendly relationship between the managers and the employees where both value the efforts of each other,

Thus, there should be a mental revolution in the organization to change how managers and employees see each other.

3. Cooperation Not Individualism

An organization is formed with different individuals and each one of them is equally important. Business is all about teamwork and cooperation, in the absence of which the organization may fail to attain the desired results. Therefore, the employees in an organization must work together, keeping aside their objectives and ego to achieve the organizational common goals which are assigned by the management. There should not be any competition among the workers instead, they should cooperate at work. The employees should not oppose the management by putting up irrelevant demands and then going on strikes for their fulfilment. The administration should also encourage the workers to give suggestions or kaizens and create an open communication system across the organization(Anjali,2019).

4. Training and Development:

Organization is Providing training and development to each and every workers to ensure they can perform tasks optimally.

Advantages of Scientific Management

1.Increase Efficiency- Scientific management aims to eliminate waste and focus on the productivity

2. Cost Reduction- Reduce the wastes and improve the efficiency leads to reduce the production cost

3.Data-Driven Decision Making Culture - Scientific data analyzing mechanism encourage management to take right decision at right time

4. Productivity Improvements- Scientific Management enhances the productivity of the workers and organizations

  1. Dear Lakshani,
Scientific Management, pioneered by Taylor, revolutionized industrial efficiency through systematic analysis and standardization. Emphasizing teamwork, harmony, and training, it boosts productivity, cuts costs, and fosters a data-driven decision culture, transforming the workplace dynamics positively.
